Building Connection and Confidence Through Cooking

One of our recent Cook.Connect.Share. programs welcomed eight young people referred through MELI Youth Services. Throughout the program, participants not only developed practical cooking skills and nutrition knowledge but also formed meaningful connections with their peers.

Two participants were unable to attend several sessions due to facing some mental health issues and later shared with their engagement worker how disappointed they were to miss the classes.

They explained that the program had become an important source of social connection and positive support for their mental wellbeing. One participant reflected: “I just turned 18 and I’m starting to live on my own, so I need to learn how to cook for myself. I always thought healthy food was too expensive, but in the classes they showed us lots of tips on how to eat healthy without spending too much money.”

Another participant commented: “I really enjoyed the program. It was fun learning new recipes, and my favourite part was sitting down and sharing the meal we made together at the end”

This group demonstrated how food can act as a powerful tool for bringing young people together, reducing social isolation, and creating a safe and welcoming environment where learning feels enjoyable and accessible.
